World MasterCard Fashion Week Recap

Ian Moore
Models, designers, bloggers and fashionistas! Nothing screams Fashion Week louder; and they surely didn’t fail to deliver their A game. Sadly, the Fashion Week in Toronto is over and it went by in a flash! This year’s collections surely left The Fashion Society excited and anxious to see the shift in fashion choices for the Fall and Winter. As we have seen Fashion week in Toronto is growing year by year, accommodating some well-known names such as supermodel Coco Rocha, and representatives from world renowned companies such as Pandora, RedKen and Mercedes Benz.

Here’s a quick recap of Fashion Week with The Fashion Society.

We were there, literally front and centre for an array of runway and studio collection displays. It was inevitably noticeable that designers went outside the box this year. Taking bold, chances with colours and textile that seemingly paid off - by the look of approval by guests.

On Tuesday, day 2, HD Homme’s designer, Hussein Dhalla, displayed very striking coats, suits and jackets for men; highlighting his royal blue and cheeky red blazer, adding a splash of colour to Fall/Winter! But the most talked about shows on Tuesday were the Mercedes Benz Start Up presenting Malorie Urbanovitch and Matiere Noire, David Dixon’s White Label, and Melissa Nepton’s edgy women’s ready to wear collection.

Mercedes Benz’s initiative to expose young desingers started off three years ago. Scouting throughout Canada to find the next designers to provide them the opportunity to have their collections displayed on the runway and to be bought by potential buyers i.e. big brand companies. This year’s brilliant designers were Matiere Noire and Malaire Urbanovitch. Opening the show was Matiere Noire. Taking a different approach on “opening the runway” by having the models on pedestals already on the runway whilst guests walk in. The show begins and these perfectly still models “detach” from their pedestals showing off the beautiful navy blue garment with a bit of an urban and futuristic look to the garment. Directly after Mateiere Noire’s display, came on the models displaying the work of Malorie Urbanovitch, who’s creations was more aimed for the everyday woman turning heads in a more conservative, edgy look.

The night ended off with The White Label by David Dixon that displayed beauty at its best when tying the knot! Every wedding dress that walked that runway had character and a respective bride for it. This collection catered to any wedding venue, bride or theme; the hardest part is choosing which one of these impeccable dresses are for you!

Thursday (day 4) was the day all the fashionistas brought out their all. Of all the nights prior, Thursday deemed to have had the most fashion forward guests! The night was a Furfull night in fashion. Farley Chatto captivated guests with fur everywhere! Every single garment was fur infused. Adding very brazen accents around the neck seams, hands, waist, and almost every part of the garment. His AW’14 collection was surely the cradle for fur for the season’s trendsetters. Bustle and Triarchy were the topping on the cake for a fabulous and edgy day 4. Displaying the garments in a very playful runway show, Triarchy’s denim attire was definitely a topic of conversation for the night. The rough “outdoorsy” but still classy looks by the mutliwear and denim designers had us at FSCO finding reason to get every design on display!

The last day, Friday was a rather fast paced day and the shortest of all five. The week ended for us, in the studio, where Hillary MacMillan, and Narces displayed an array of beautiful dresses and suits for women - Redefining trends in prints and textile for women’s clothing and drifting from the contemporary styles and looks to transform the everyday woman to a more fashion forward woman. From a hen patterned dresses to plaid dresses, the range of styles were great!

Fashion week this year was better and bigger than ever! Every design every outfit seen was art, passion and thought come to life. We look forward to seeing this year’s collections being rocked on the streets this Fall and leaves us wondering: What do the designers have up their sleeves for the next Fashion week?

REBEL DECEIT / BELLAVANCE AW’14

With the start of the World MasterCard Fashion Week in Toronto only days away, the fashion scene in the city is already starting to get hot and busy; leaving fashionistas, both local and international, anxious to dress and to impress. Pre-Fashion Week started off for The Fashion Society with a fabulous Tuesday evening for a very fashionable, fresh and intimate runway show showcasing the vibrant work by Bellavance. Designers Nolan Bellavance and Ava Hama’s intentions for their AW’14 collection is to depict mystery and rebellion in action, which was displayed from inception to runway; using the example of the schoolgirl who modifies her uniform to be more in touch with fashion, and to be unique.

The models strutted the runway in designer shoes by Nine West, stunning garments by Bellavance, and hair slicked back into lustrous ponytails; the message the designers meant to relay to the audience was clear and well delivered. A great showcase of the military rebel or the average person breaking rules was radiated through all of Bellavance’s pieces. The diamond crop topped suit, the custom pleated garment with a chain link print highlighting textual elements with references to tattoos, to the bold denim dress with seams that were personally hand distressed with sand paper by Hama. All of the designs are mysterious masterpieces which left the audience with a sense of rebellion in an approachable manner. The collection is bold, daring and very wearable.

A design that truly stood out for the viewers and the designers themselves was the dress referred to as “the garbage bag dress.” This all black bouncy dress, with a slight shimmer emits the look of a trendy and luxurious dress, but made out of material considered the opposite . Designers Bellavance and Hama said they were captivated by the idea of a dress made of a fabric that felt and looked closely of that of garbage bags. The piece is the perfect paradox, turning the unthinkable into gold. One designer’s garbage is the fashion worlds new treasure.

Tuesday’s shows in collaboration with DHL, Pantene and Covergirl was a huge success. Industry personnel, bloggers and magazine representatives contented with the passion of the designers; Designers Bellavance and Hama were left with a feeling of satisfaction and reward, knowing that their hard work is appealing to their audience. A congratulatory praise to these phenomenal designers and their team, hard work and dedication leading to the event produced a one of kind show.
