Julia Loraso is an up and coming makeup artist who we couldn’t wait to work with. Her unique sense of style and artistry makes her a talent to be reckoned with. Therefore, we jumped on the opportunity to team up with the Montreal-based glamazon for the Fashion Society’s latest photo shoot. We also couldn’t resist a moment to talk beauty, inspiration, and career.
When did you first become interested in makeup?
“I became interested in art at eight years old when I first started oil painting, and then eventually when I began to wear makeup, it just seemed to all connect. My paintbrushes became makeup brushes and my oils became eye shadows and pigments. A little over a year ago, I decided that this was something that allowed me to be creative and made me happy, but the best part was that I could use my skills to make other people feel good about themselves.”
What inspires you?
“I like to think that I can find inspiration in almost anything however, the way that I decide what kind of look I will be creating comes entirely from the model. I study the face and I get a feeling about where he/she’s from and which cultures influence his/her features and how I should emphasize, define, and compliment them. The most important thing to keep in mind is to make sure to incorporate certain aspects, such as colours, that the model likes and feels comfortable with. This way, the model is confident and that radiates through the makeup.”
Can you explain the looks you created for the Fashion Society photo shoot?
“For the shoot, I was asked to create looks for certain stereotypes. We had the party girl who had a dark smokey eye and sort of muted lips; the very 60s inspired woman with extremely thick eyebrows; the elegant and timeless femme fatale who of course wore her classic red pout; and finally the pretty, innocent, girly girl, whose eyes were light and feminine in pastel purples.”
What are the biggest makeup mistakes to avoid?
“As almost all makeup artists would say, the biggest makeup mistakes come down to foundation. It is so important to make sure the colour is on point and to properly blend the foundation, especially at the jaw line and hairline; nobody wants to look like they are wearing a mask! Another makeup mishap would have to be the over-plucked eyebrows, just because it is so hard to let them grow back and drawing them on can be difficult and time consuming.”
What do you love most about what you do?
“Of course, I love making people feel beautiful and confident, but I also really like that it allows me to be creative, and it allows me to experiment. No face is the same, so if I decide to do a red lip on two people, it will always look different. The makeup industry is always changing and always moving at a fast pace, so there is always something new to learn.”
What makeup trends/ colour trends are we going to see for Spring/Summer?
“This spring and summer we are going to be seeing a lot of thick and bold features, especially when it comes to the brows. Eyelashes, eyeliner, and lips will also be played up, so falsies and bold colours are going to be in the spotlight. As for colour, we will be seeing a lot of reds and pastels.”
