Drama, Art, Theater, and flamboyance is expect how Ralph Leroy does a fashion show. His collection and expectations on the clothing become secondary unlike most designers. This year was no exception as Ralph Leroy was the only designer whose show lasted 42 minutes.  If we focus on solely his collection, Ralph work his Haitian roots with the music, making the clothing seem a part of it. He out did himself on the women clothing as the work on it was spectacular, however he failed to live up on his men’s collection. His men’s jackets were remakes of his older collections. Ralph is one of the designers who has a unique sense of color and can work magic on combinations most people wouldn’t think of such as pairing a fuchsia skinny with a cropped tweed jacket; it is eye catching and wearable. Overall his wow factor is in the execution of his show, with attention given to every minor detail. From the backdrop to the mixing of traditional African- descendant folk dance from Haiti and ballet dancers. It was all portraying beauty, to each model and dancer performing to perfection Ralph Leroy proved once again why he commands the stage.

Visions of a sexy librarian were in mind when I saw Rachel Sin’s collection this season. Each model looked the part with their hair up, frames and the form fitting clothing. The look was so effortlessly cool that it oozed confidence and sex appeal. Keeping the collection functional, Rachel was able to translate practicality with fashion and didn’t miss her mark.  Never have I been so excited with the color beige, fell in love with teal all over again and the combination of polka dots blouses with two toned skinny fitting pants got me singing “call me maybe”. Rachel Sin is definitely on my top 5 list.

Luko Marion

L’AUTRE COUTURE DE LUKO MARION is one of my favorites this season.  Luko Marion kept his collection simple but highlighted the collection via details such as the trimmings, accessories, and the interplay of basic colors. Working with a lot of grey, black, and white; he designed simple wearable’s but layered them with military cropped jacket. A lot of net in white and grey, redefined the little black dress. Leather trimmings graced almost all his pieces and mesh bras were worn outside a turtleneck long black dress. The right amount of glittering accessories, sailor hats and bustier tops created the perfect balance of edgy feminine with a touch of masculinity.

The final day of Montreal Fashion Week introduced us to many new designers and the ever promising Telio fashion show. Bang Couture showed us functional but stylish winter jackets, while Exhibit 24 gave us a glimpse of many designers from Jennifer Glasgow who incorporates her artistic vision in her designs, to Copious, designs that were inspired by the 1940s. Designers such as Rachel F, Marilyne Baril, and VOYOU to mention a few, had the opportunity to showcase what they had to offer the Québec clientele as well as the industry. Telio gave the opportunity to young upcoming designers a chance to prove them-selves while following certain themes and guidelines set by the most sought out after Textile Company in North America.
Overall this season we saw a lot of colors with fashion meeting graphic art as the central theme. Designers kept us entertained and interested as well as the ambiance was rich, glamorous and fashionable. We saw many familiar faces as well got to know some new ones. The event may be over but for the majority of industry people, we are just getting started.
